The History of the Biewer Terrier

The Biewer Terrier, also known as the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier à la Pom Pon, is a relatively new and unique breed that originated in Germany in the 1980s. This breed has an interesting and charming history tied to the passion and dedication of a German couple, Werner and Gertrud Biewer.

The Beginning: Accidental Beauty

The Biewer Terrier’s history starts with the couple’s love for Yorkshire Terriers. The Biewers were well-known and successful breeders of Yorkshire Terriers, consistently breeding top-quality dogs. However, in 1984, they were surprised to discover a unique puppy born with an unusual coat pattern—white, black, and tan—due to a recessive gene in two of their champion Yorkie bloodlines. This pup, named Schneeflöckchen von Friedheck, marked the beginning of what would later become the Biewer Terrier breed.

Recognizing the beauty of this tri-colored coat and intrigued by the potential for a new breed, Werner and Gertrud Biewer decided to selectively breed these dogs to produce more puppies with the same stunning coat pattern. Over the next few years, they worked diligently to create a consistent line of these tri-colored terriers.

Recognition and Popularity

The Biewer Terrier gained immediate popularity due to its striking appearance and delightful temperament. In 1989, the breed was officially recognized in Germany as the "Biewer Yorkshire Terrier à la Pom Pon." The term “à la Pom Pon” was a whimsical addition, referring to the breed’s fluffy and pompom-like appearance, which only added to its charm.

Despite the growing interest in the breed, the Biewer Terrier remained relatively unknown outside of Germany for some time. However, its affectionate nature, playful personality, and elegant coat soon captured the hearts of dog lovers around the world.

A Separate Breed

In the early 2000s, American enthusiasts brought the Biewer Terrier to the United States. This marked a pivotal moment in the breed’s history, as breeders and geneticists began working to ensure the breed’s purity. In 2007, a genetic study confirmed that the Biewer Terrier was indeed distinct from the Yorkshire Terrier due to its specific recessive piebald gene.

As a result of this research, the Biewer Terrier was recognized as a separate breed. The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized the Biewer Terrier as a distinct breed in 2016, and in January 2021, the American Kennel Club (AKC) fully recognized the Biewer Terrier as part of its Toy Group.

Today

Today, the Biewer Terrier continues to grow in popularity worldwide. Known for their elegant coats, loving personalities, and vibrant energy, they make excellent companions for families, singles, and dog enthusiasts. Despite their small size, they are known for their big hearts and affectionate natures.

The Biewer Terrier’s unique history, beginning as an unexpected genetic surprise, has led to the development of a beloved breed admired for its beauty, intelligence, and loving nature.
